These vegetated surfaces don’t just look pretty. They have other benefits as well, including cooling city blocks, reducing loud noises, and improving a building’s energy efficiency.What’s more, a recent modeling study shows that green walls can potentially reduce large amounts of air pollution in what’s called a “street canyon,” or the corridor between tall buildings.

For the study, Thomas Pugh, a biogeochemist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, and his colleagues created a computer model of a green wall with generic vegetation in a Western European city. Then they recorded chemical reactions based on a variety of factors, such as wind speed and building placement.

The simulation revealed a clear pattern: A green wall in a street canyon trapped or absorbed large amounts of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter—both pollutants harmful to people, said Pugh. Compared with reducing emissions from cars, little attention has been focused on how to trap or take up more of the pollutants, added Pugh, whose study was published last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Legend of Korra is sooooooo kickass! I had just barely seen it in the middle of summer, when baby was delayed in entering this world! (Well, delayed in the eyes of the doctors who predicted when he should have arrived… :P) We watched it together in about 3 or 4 days! I wish there were more episodes!! ; w ;

It was perfect timing, since a couple weeks after I had just watched the whole series, I get an email from Pixel Drip gallery saying they want me for their “I’m the Art Show, Deal With It!” show.

Random Notes: I definitely tried something different when it came to colors and the way I work digitally. At first I was a little skeptical that I’d get it to turn out the way I wanted it to (misty-looking, and very monotone/sepiatone-looking). Glad it turned out the way I dreamed it! :]

I understand that the series is pretty steam-punk-like, anyway. At least when it comes to the design of Republic City. And so, why not do something weirdly Victorian Steampunk? Steam bend that tea, and then bend the tea you steam bent. :P delicious.

Notice now I tried to make Korra more tribal/native-punk, rather than straight up steampunk :P

When I was pregnant, and me, my husband, and my doula were waiting for baby to enter the world, we all sang this song quite a bit! It brings me good memories.

This is the final design I went with. Of course, it’s totally NOT going to look like this once I print it… And so far, it’s looking fabulous!

The print run was 7 days, but since my design with the “sunburst” behind the goat head is so complicated for us to do ‘by hand’, I have 2 more days to finish my print… Hopefully it is soon! I just thought I’d share this image here on Tumblr, since I am slow to update my arts as of late…

“This piece was primarily a trust exercise, in which she told viewers she would not move for six hours no matter what they did to her. She placed 72 objects one could use in pleasing or destructive ways, ranging from flowers and a feather boa to a knife and a loaded pistol, on a table near her and invited the viewers to use them on her however they wanted.

Initially, Abramović said, viewers were peaceful and timid, but it escalated to violence quickly. “The experience I learned was that … if you leave decision to the public, you can be killed… I felt really violated: they cut my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the public. Everyone ran away, escaping an actual confrontation.”

This piece revealed something terrible about humanity, similar to what Philip Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment or Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiment, both of which also proved how readily people will harm one another under unusual circumstances.”

This performance showed just how easy it is to dehumanize a person who doesn’t fight back, and is particularly powerful because it defies what we think we know about ourselves. I’m certain the no one reading this believes the people around him/her capable of doing such things to another human being, but this performance proves otherwise.”
